  • A great way to know how old a furnace and hot water heater are is to look closely at the units. It’s not unusual there are dates marked on unit indicating repair or install dates. Hot water heaters have an average life span of ten years.
  • The fuse box or circuit box that still contains fuses.
  • In parts of an unconverted basement, wires that hang like spaghetti strands, may indicate defective wiring.
  • Check electrical outlooks to make sure they are properly grounded.
